for a week’s work during the season;
when winning was stat-wise less of a deal
and time between goals not so costly;
before a player’s first biography
could be shelved and remaindered
before they turn twenty.

passed through the ages of sporting stories,
recorded in writing by poetical historians.

They say that the finest association footballer
that anybody could possibly imagine playing
on any of the pitches around the world
skied a ball so far over the bar
that they say it became a star.
