before two points could prize the show
for a week’s work during the season;
when winning was stat-wise less of a deal
and time between goals not so costly;
before a player’s first biography
could be shelved and remaindered
before they turn twenty.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 They say it happened many years ago,
passed through the ages of sporting stories,
recorded in writing by poetical historians.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 They say that the finest association footballer
that anybody could possibly imagine playing
on any of the pitches around the world
skied a ball so far over the bar
that they say it became a star.
