Notes

RIP Hans Tilkowski (12 July 1935 – 5 January 2020)

Hans Tilkowski played in goal for West Germany in the 1966 World Cup Final. He never accepted that Geoff Hurst’s shot crossed the line for England’s third goal, but resigned himself to it with a sense of humour, agreeing to unveil a statue in Azerbaijan to the linesman who indicated that the goal should stand. Technology since seems to have decided that Hurst’s shot landed on, not over, the line.
I imagine he approached his own demise, last week, at the age of 84 in a similar way.
