‘Hapless’

Early season optimism dispatched
as Town crash,
thrashed 5 nil by Gills.
Score line a millstone
round Wilson’s neck.
Players branded ‘hapless’
by unimpressed hacks.
Robins toothless in attack
and hopeless in defence;
rudderless on the pitch,
a ship washed onto the rocks.
But ‘hapless’? Hang about –
hapless means unlucky
and Town were lucky
(to quote an old cliche)
to get none.
