I read the news today…..

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 It told me that kopite Phil Downey had sadly passed away
And I took some time to take this in, then emotion carried me effortlessly back through memories,
Flying through decades of divorce and death and birth and love and life to Liverpool Fc, my Scouse TARDIS…
I was back in ’77, and that extraordinary night 42 years ago,
The Reds conquered Rome, and us kids watching from the front room huddled in our house, were mesmerized by the unfolding swathes of flags and lovingly homemade colours carried by the traveling Kop,
And then one image, like Monroe with her skirt dancing, resonates, “
“JOEY ATE THE FROGS LEGS…”
This one banner unfurled its genius, held proud beneath the roman stars and birthed immortality, didn’t need no apostrophes and in 13 words created a Scouse haiku, like Shakespeare not for an age, but for all time.
Two Liverpool lads, Downey & Cummings, sadly passed, but these words, their words walk on.

Notes

Phil Downey and Jimmy Cummings (both now sadly passed) two Kopites who made the boss and immortal banner:

JOEY ATE THE FROGS LEGS
MADE THE SWISS ROLL
NOW HES MUNCHING GLADBACH

RIP lads #YNWA
