I Will Wrap Up My Heart In The Red Scarf

In the dew of his kisses I’ll travel
I will nest in the pouch of his dreams
I will rise beneath skies fused with thunder
I will sail upon blue sparkling seas
I will dance in the arms of Picasso
I will pull down the moon from her sleep
I will blend all the colours in rainbows
I will rest in the secrets of peace

I will walk in the cool light of Monet
Catch the bloom of Redoute’s first rose
I will rise on the rumour of senses
As I talk with Napoleon’s ghost
I will carry the waters that freshen
From a cloud whose gentle rain bleeds
And be blown by the sweet breath of divinity
Like the moon on her ocean of dreams

I will swim in the fires of Neruda
Whilst Lorca’s old heart I will charm
I will punch through the riddles of Lennon
Whilst Desnos reads truth in my palm
I will listen to Connolly and Sands
Whose fight for the salt of the earth
Gave freedom a voice that rings proud
And whose souls I recall in my prayers

My Gospels are Shankly and Paisley
My faith will be Liverpool Red
On the Kop there with Emily Bronte
“It’s sound ‘ere” she breathlessly said
I will stroll with the shadow of Whitman
With the patience of Gandhi close by
And I joust with the language of Dumas
As Yeats pulls the thorn from my side

I will measure the deeds of my sentence
I will judge neither sinner or sinned
I will be what you ask of my history
I will slumber on liberty’s wings
I will conjure the phoenix of goodness
Take communion where sanctity feeds
I will wrap up my heart in the red scarf
And no one will steal it from me.
