Jumpers 4 Goalposts 0

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 They used to be there –
wrecked on the rec, risible rods of rust
held together, by sticky tape or ties…

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 with the target markers confined to history
we learned to make our own – ‘garments for goals’
ganseys, pullovers, sweaters, crew necks, v necks, turtle necks, parkas, hoodies, snoods
the grounded bundles, a barometer of fashion
effectively, whatever was top layer when running out the door

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 so woolly decked, with woolly turnout, we’d split into two teams
usually, it was the ball-bringer, who’d get first pick
followed by divisions of opinion, as to which team was ‘unfair’, or ‘loaded’
so there’d be swaps, trades, transfers, substitutions before kick-off
‘teamsheets’ trashed, then captains consenting

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 anyway, there we’d be …
ball, space, combatants, all present
all we needed
were doors for scores….

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 And so we improvised, in time honoured fashion….

Notes

Happy days!

with a modern twist – ‘snoods for goalposts’ ? it doesn’t have that same magical ring to it!
