i’ve got a horrible confession to make
I once was a seventies soccer hooligan
Not something I’ve ever been proud of
Because I call myself a real football fan.

The seventies was a really crazy time
Football grounds became like battle zones
Inside the police trying to keep fans apart
Outside dodging the bottles, bricks, and stones.

It was really hard to escape it
Especially when part of a crew
On a saturday you were in it together
Running away wasn’t something you’d do.

I do feel ashamed and disgusted
That I really could have stooped so low
When really I should have had the courage
To walk away, or to just say no.

Now I smile and shake the hand
Of a fan from a rival football team
Have a pint or two and some banter
And that’s reality not just a dream.

Let’s hope and pray those dark days are over
As it seems to be trying to get back in
Because there’s still a lot of supporters
Who get irate it their team fails to win.

So let’s keep the seventies in Room 101
Don’t ever let it creep back in
Yes we know to us soccer is important
But there really is more to life than a win !
