They dressed in blue, the night Mancunians made
Wembley and Euope their own. Heat and fire on an
Evening of springtime humidity; Portugese men of
War to contend with, but nothing compared with the
Sense of responsibility on certain shoulders. Munich
Was gone, but never ever forgotten, and now a chance
At long last to secure redemption for the Babes who
Didn’t return. Awash in red and white, a steep-sloped
Covered bowl – an arena filled with northern emotion.

1 – 0, 1- 1; on a knife edge. Benfica the party spoilers,
Would they ruin it all ? Eusebio free on goal, the Black
Panther, colonial king, but still human. He blasted it –
And Stepney saved. Ninety minutes brought no releif,
No respite from the tension. No release. Darkness in the
Deep stands, a simmering anticipation in the shadows.
Extra time, and Best strikes – who else. Ecstacy abounds.
Two more, and it’s over – the quest fulfilled at last. Ten
Years’ angst assuaged, a team locked in time. Victorious.
