I’d put Gil Scott-Heron, between the sticks
Cos his oulde one played for Celtic
With Vincent* thrown in to the mix
Excelling down the left wing.

I’d have Auden down the middle
As a scything centre half
With our man Spike at outside right
To make the punters laugh.

Christina with her love live spurned
Would sweep up from the back
With Adrian Mitchell, To whom it may concern
Poetic in attack.

Simon Armitage, cos he’s a Manc
And we must have one of those
With Leonard cos he so morose
Cohen (going) down both flanks.

Brooke would stand there posing
Like a public schoolboy would
Whilst Behan would quote quaint prose
All paying punters understood.
