We used to hate Mike Doyle
when I was a kid
because he was Man City
and we were Red.

But he was quick as well
and could move the ball
he’d never let down his mates
we hated him above all.

Though mostly we hated him
because he was a fan
was born in Ashton
and was City, boy and man.

I grew up in Stretford
the Red side of town
where Doyle was a… so and so

Of course we didn’t hate Doyle
he just got under our skin
and now he’ll be remembered
as a footballer, and man.
