Pass Me The Football

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 My mother’d no money for music.
My father, he played back in school.
Just like my grandfather, before him.
They were hard men and nobody’s fool.
I struggled in reading and writing.
To succeed I was nobody’s bet,
but the crosses I’d hit, so inviting,
the ball’d find the back of the net.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 I met a girl who was dreamy.
She liked to watch football too.
She’d come to the park just to see me,
then we’d head out like young lover do.
I was the next up-and-comer.
We’d drink free. We’d laugh. We would sing.
Almost all that I knew I learned from her,
and she made me feel like a king.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 So, pass me the football.
Maybe I’ll pass it back.
Maybe I’ll let it run wide to the wing,
where I’ll spearhead an all out attack.
I’m not funny, or clever, or handsome,
but I’ll make up for all that I lack,
if you’ll pass me the football,
and I pass the same football back.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Young manager made me a winger,
with my speed and the shape of my cross,
but in the low leagues we would linger.
We’d follow each win with a loss.
Maybe was strategy, tactics.
Maybe was love for the drink.
Maybe was love for the drastic
and living a life on the brink.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Now I ship packages daily
and take home my minimum wage.
Delivery, speed, still don’t fail me.
I used them to turn a new page.
Our son, he has taken up playing.
Still, I tell him to mind his grades,
so that when his ball skills start decaying,
he can turn to professions or trades.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 We’ve only ninety minutes,
and a bit of extra time.
Though better to win it’s
only not the trying that’s the crime.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 So, pass me the football.
Maybe I’ll pass it back.
Maybe I’ll let it run wide to the wing,
where I’ll spearhead an all out attack.
I’m not young anymore, but I’m wiser
and I’ll make up for all that I lack,
If you’ll only pass the football, Son,
so I can pass it back.
