Seville, 1982

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 A moment from the future of the game
Or one from a gladiatorial past
Played without mercy
Played without a ball
Battiston, presented with half the field
By the safecracking feet of Platini

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The Frenchman, eyes down, unaware
A Wild West contest awaits
Schumacher narrows the sights
Feels the intent, the menace
Stalks the arc of the run
Swivels to connect side on

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Justice delegated her duty
To three in black
Their concern given solely
To the inconsequence of the goal kick
Away from the impact, this travesty
This conduct far beyond the ungentlemanly

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 A still, battered body.
From the perpetrator, only the swagger
The arrogant disbelief
At the audacity of the victim
Who are you to provoke this violence
How dare you compete with me

Notes

Editor’s note:
Andrew,
Superb.

The day we realised the absolute infallibility of the arbiters.

Clik.
