Cruel jibes in the corridors,
hushed tones in the classroom.
Fingers pointing, tongues wagging;
am I the victim of a whispering campaign?

Secret smiles and sniggers as I
stand before the students.
Half opened can of Seven Up
fizzing merrily on the desk.

Colleagues cannot quite conceal
their mirth, smirking openly.
I grin awkwardly in return,
but I am hurting, hurting.

Not for me the Magnificent Seven
or the Seven Wonders of the World
and how can seven
possibly be lucky for me?

Fingers held up one by one,
confirming to disbelieving sons
that their team had been stuffed,
well and truly thrashed out of sight.
