So here it is Merry Christmas…

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Beneath the tinsel and the tat
And millionaires who preach
A voice is calling from the past
My heart it longs to reach

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Like Marley’s Ghost it calls me home
And down the roads I stroll
Like drops of rain inside my shoe
The memories flood my soul

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The empty shed the silent walls
Would speak to me of tales
Of those long gone and brought to mind
Come back from yesterday

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The pitch no longer green I’m sure
But once like emeralds shone
The mates I skinned the goals I scored
Like childish dreams long gone

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 The park sold off to builders now
For houses stood in rows
The broken glass the muddy field
Gave up its muddy ghosts

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 The rains that turned the ground to floods
Once dried and measured flat
The council chased us all away
And built a load of flats

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 We’re made from laces broken studs
A bond of puma boots
Those rolled down socks just like our days
Old shinpads working loose

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 But kids played here as football stars
Scored goals all heaven bound
Made friends poured tears and dried them all
This place was boss, was sound

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 No one grew to pull on shirts
Of favoured football teams
But once yes once we seized the day
And lived those football dreams

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 A father stands upon the grass
And does not say a word
The child come home looks up and smiles
“Yes oh yes I heard”.

Notes

Nostalgia seems so much more poignant at Christmas; I always think fondly back on Perry Como Christmas Specials, The Late Great Morecambe and Wise, Ronco Brush o Matic and Babycham adverts. Was it better then? Probably not, but when you are so old that you were part of the original Slade fans who first heard Noddy hollering
“Its CHHHHHRRRIIIIISSSSSSTTTTTMMMMMAASSSSSSSSSS!”
You can’t help thinking it wasn’t all bad then! 🙂

Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year to one and all.
