The penalty spot that so embarrassed David Beckham might as well have been made from a thick tufted carpet square placed on top of the grass. It blended in as well as showbiz toupees.

Discussions are to be held today on whether to have penalty shoot-outs to decide the outcome of league games which finish in a draw.
I would like to see this happen, but only for no-score draws, even though it will mean a huge loss in points obtained by Norwich City, who have a well-known allergic reaction to penalty spots – they come out in severe misses…
