Still Up For The Cup?

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 who here will tire ?
those shots of yesterday
thrills spills tears and fears
cardboard silver paper cupfuls
of shocks and suprises
when favourites tumbled again and again and again
in the magic

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 cold December lunchtimes
huddled round cracking transistor radios
mugs of tea warming hands keeping out the cold
on buiding site factory floors and long gone shipyards
who will we get? please let it be at home anyone
then the reality.. Hartlepools away

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 nights in Crewe and Darlington
when the mighty fell in fog and snow
hazy black and white afternoons
in Tooting & Mitcham Hereford and Bournemouth
on glue pot pitches of mud and rain
standing wet through on crumbling terraces
cramped and heaving when pipe smoke and breath mist
swirled in scarf-like clouds above our bobble-hatted heads
when corrugated rooves like haybarns lined tiny grounds
to let in strange clothed rattling rosetted fans and rain
on long gone crowds of yesterday?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 these are the days and nights of pantomimes
and look out they’re behind you
those Davids and Jacks
rising striving longing praying
climbing like chidlren in comics
the fantasy football beanstalks of their dreams
to slay those fancy Goliaths
again and again and again
in the magic

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 I’m still up for the cup
are you?
