That Carlos Alberto Goal

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Was there ever a finer few moments of football ?
Sumptuous, carefree, yet precise and powerful,
like the smokers fatal first drag, I was hooked,
in an instant, hooked on a game, nine years old.
For forty one years I have looked to replicate
that first glorious high, and I’ve come close
but never quite got there, aren’t all addicts alike ?
Gave up the fags long ago, but I know I’ll never
give up on the game.

The 1970 world cup was the first I can remember, and I have maintained a childlike innocence about the joy that the game can bring, even in these cynical times.
