The Atmosphere, Electric …

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 An Italian job for Liverpool
European Cup lies in wait
Singing, clapping, stamping
Three-nil up just after eight
The atmosphere, electric …
Say those who can recall
Inter beaten out of sight
Liverpudlians, ten feet tall

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Anfield, packed to the rafters
Thousands locked outside
Saint Etienne and Platini
Met a sea of passion and pride
The atmosphere, electric …
Two behind but didn’t stop
When we got that late winner
The roof came off The Kop

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Stood in our way were Chelsea
With the best that money could buy
But Garcia brought the house down
For Mourinho, the end was nigh
The atmosphere, electric …
Shocked cockneys admired the sight
Later, with Shanks, we realised*
Goalposts were moved that night

Notes

Liverpool supporters widely regard the European Cup games against Inter Milan in 1965, Saint Etienne in 1977 and Chelsea in 2005 as the greatest nights, in terms of support, at Anfield. I have been a regular since 1972 and I am convinced that the Chelsea game will never be beaten for atmosphere.

* After the game, many of us congregated at the Shankly statue. Somebody had placed a red scarf around his neck. We stayed for a while and celebrated with him … It seemed the right thing to do.
