The Footballer

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Are you Neruda? Lorca? Desnos?
Does the burning heart of their wisdom
Trace the blood of your heart
Are you man alone?
What dreams gather pace in the journey
Of your blood
What fugitive’s glory binds your aloneness,
Oh solitary man…

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 There is a universe in your dark eyes
Children try to copy the patterns of your greatness
Your name scribbled in ink across the back
Of their shirts, they want your name and yours alone
Their limbs never tire of the dirt
And broken glass that waits for the mistimed tackle
The desparing lunge
Are you only Man?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Are you Moore? Pele? Maradona?
Dalglish? Murdoch? Edwards?
Each a Prince a King
What poets these what burning brightness
Each star in his own sky
And the fallen Angel holds out his hand
His oustretched fingers, neither fist nor prayer
Empty.
