The football pitch of childhood
The emerald park so green
That keeps our memories wrapped in
The pages of our dreams

When hours of endless summers
Fused the colours from a box
And paled the rainbows pastels
To break down childhood’s locks

When Georgie Boy was flying
As his mother cheered her son
And Bobby Moore immaculate
As golden as the sun

Oh Dalglish turning angles
As Sir Bob he turned to smile
Shook the open hand of Shankly
Full of Merseypride

But no one saw me running
With my hair wild streaming free
Down the wings of that old schoolyard
From the corners of a dream

The ball was like a dancer
Touched my toes and led me on
Through the shadows of remembrance
Down time’s corridors we run

Just like Pele poised immortal
From my Esso coins of old
Banks of England looted
As I scored the perfect goal.
