The coldness, for once, is ignored.
Fathers, sons, daughters,
All football supporters,
Assemble outside the mayoral headquarters,
To find out if Jason Byrne’s scored.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 On a yacht anchored off Monte Carlo,
In the harbour where vessels are moored,
A suave, debonair
Polished millionaire
Strikes his laptop with fury and tears out his hair,
Still uncertain if Jason Byrne’s scored.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 On the middle of the Antarctic plateau,
Where the ice-cap has never been thawed,
Scientists mumble
And desperately fumble,
With radio sets, as they bicker and grumble,
Not knowing if Jason Byrne’s scored.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 In the deep-reaching bowels of the Pentagon,
Where espionage records are stored,
The stay-at-home spies
All look up to the skies
Where the satellite pries with its ears and its eyes
To examine if Jason Byrne’s scored.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 On the plains of the wild Serengeti,
That have only been partly explored,
Mosquitoes are humming,
And natives are drumming,
Not warning each other that white men are coming,
But wondering if Jason Byrne’s scored.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 In the midst of the deep-swelling ocean,
With seventy five sailors on board,
The ship taps Morse code
To the nearest abode,
As the Jack Tars are pent up, about to explode,
Still uncertain if Jason Byrne’s scored.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 The Indians of Tierra del Fuego
Labour long, for such little reward.
The fish may not bite,
Nor the sun shed its light,
But they’ll crowd round a phone on a cold Friday night,
To ascertain if Jason Byrne’s scored.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Millions of miles ‘cross the vacuum,
The Martian Explorer looks bored.
It opens a latch,
And sends back a despatch,
“Can someone please find out the score in the match?
Oh, and check out if Jason Byrne’s scored.”
