Vieira

Our super-skipper,
Patrick Vieira
was an Arsenal hero.
I used to believe
that whatever hole we were in
he had the ability
to bale us out.

He wasn’t a flashy player,
didn’t score glamour goals,
he was our midfield general,
anchorman, enforcer. Enigma.
In my mind he was invincible,
the one that nobody
wanted to play against.

Every summer
the papers said he was on the move
to Milan or Madrid
or some other big-name club.
Inevitable really, a player that good,
But I never believed the talk because,
to me, Vieira WAS Arsenal.

He was our hero
which made Roy Keane
the devil incarnate.
I remember watching
Arsenal v United
wondering which of them
would be sent off.

And all to often
it was Vieira who saw red,
although he was our hero
our man was no angel
gave as good as he got.
But I still maintain
that Roy Keane always asked for it.

And when we watched
his last game
The FA Cup Final against Man u,
and watched him score
the last penalty of the shootout
to cement the victory,
we didn’t know that it was his last.

When Juventus came knocking
we didn’t think he’d answer the call,
we were used to speculation
about where he’d be playing next season,
so when he left we were lost
and when we played Juventus
we sang his song again.

When I think of Vieira
I reminisce about the glory days,
I recall the send offs, yes,
but also the leadership,
‘Arsenal’ winning the World Cup in ’98 –
or so claimed The Sun,
I remember those battles with United.

When I think of Vieira,
I don’t think of Juventus or Inter Milan,
because he’s still Arsenal through and through,
I think of the bloke who made me,
a keeper since forever,
consider playing central-midfield
to emulate a fraction of his genius.
