it gets harder and harder each moment
the weight on your shoulders each game
and the taunts that persist with each error and miss
only add to the insults and blame
when it just doesn’t happen the way that it did
on all of those great nights before
and all you can say is keep chipping away
it’s a nightmare when you just can’t score

they fly onto the bar and they skim off the post
you could cut through the tension like cheese
and you’re testing the patience of fans and relations
and you feel like you’re down on your knees
and it isn’t the size of the price tag
and we know ’cause we’ve been here before?
we call them the dry spells they set off alarm bells
it’s a nightmare when you just can’t score

and there is no solution or comfort
but to keep on and keep keeping on
it’s a pretty safe bet when you do find the net
that a mountain of stress will be gone
and you won’t be the first and you won’t be the last
like a salesman who can’t sell a thing
and no-one can measure the fear or the pressure
that each opportunity brings

it’s a field day for fans and the media
and you feel you can’t take any more
but the longer it lasts just imagine the blast
when you finally suddenly score
it gets better and better each moment
and you’re back where you know you should be
and there is no defence for a lost confidence
’til you score and your talent runs free
