Now I don’t remember Adlestrop –
The name, because one afternoon
Of heat our local football team won
Unwontedly. We were over the moon.
The radio hissed. We heard the full time scores.
No one left and no one came
On the bare platform. What I saw
Wasn’t Adlestrop – it wasn’t the name
Of the station we were standing in
With its wrappers of sweets and cans all dry
No whit less still and lonely fair
Than all the toilet rolls in the sky.
And for that moment a supporter sang
Close by, and around him mistier
Farther and farther all drunk fans
To show who was the pissedier.
