Did yer ever play football with a cotton reel
Dream of leather balls and grass?
When the stark reality of it all
Was cinders, stones and broken glass

Did you have real nets?
One forgets, such dreams of long ago
Again, the harsh reality was,
You couldn’t afford a ball

Did yer get the train, to a cinders pitch
When the other team, came by bus
When half time came in a close fought game
Did yer think, ‘its them or us’

Were yer team a bunch of misfits
With just six pairs of boots
Different coloured shorts and socks
That the other team thought a hoot?

Did yer think that they, were better than you
Cos they had all the gear?
No! Not for a minute
When yer young, you have no fear!

To beat them boys, was ecstatic joy
A feeling just so…… good
How did we achieve it?
Cos our teacher, said we could!

When everything’s against yer
When yer play for love of fun
Its one great big adventure
This game of football, son!
