England’s Number One 2026

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 He’s one of two named Jordan –
The other’s Henderson.
This one’s the guy between the sticks,
He’s England’s Number One.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 He scares the opposition,
His own defenders too –
If anyone’s caught slacking,
Who knows what he might do?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 To those up front he often sends
A nice, juicy long ball.
Latch on it, lads, head straight for goal,
You’ll have the chance to score.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 You may recall Bonetti,
Lev Yashin, Zoff, Buffon.
Great keepers in their day, no doubt,
But Pickford’s Number One.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 When not wearing his England Shirt,
Where does he earn his corn?
In Spain, or France or Italy,
Or some such foreign shore?

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 No, there you’re much mistaken
About our Jordan Picks.
He draws his pay on Merseyside,
He plays at Hilly Dicks!

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 11/6/26
Denys E. W. Jones

Notes

This is a re-working of a poem entitled England’s Number One that I posted on this website during the 2018 World Cup.
