Wanderers’ Lament

To score a goal, oh – just to score a goal.
To put the ball where it belongs, to win a
Match. To play full backs at full back, to
Play 4-4-2, not 4-5-1. A dream, a fantasy
In this age of caution.

To show some flair, to gain respect from
The TV pundits. To honour the name and
The heritage of our club. To watch a team
That’s going to give us a chance, to give
Us some optimism.

To have a manager with the sense to see
What’s wrong, and the humility to admit it.
To have a team going forward – not just
Clutching at straws, hoping for the best
And getting the worst.

To return whence we came – the fizzy pop
League welcomes overpaid underachievers.
At least fixtures on Saturdays at 3pm, maybe
Even cheaper tickets (joke). Back where we
Began, all over again.

To have ambition, confidence, and a sense of
Purpose – to respect your fans, to give them
Hope. That’s all we ask. And a goal to cheer,
Now and then. How Billy and the Doog would
Turn in their graves.
