T’was like a day when you part with a lover
Wondering what yer gonna do next?
Should you go to the pictures, or dive under the covers
And stay in bed feeling dejected?

As rain hits yer windows, you grimace
At grey skies and black clouds overhead
Even The Power Station overlooking the river
Once proud seems to slope when it’s wet.

Chancing yer arm you get ready
Whilst rain lashes outside on the street
A brisk walk to the ground ignoring the wet
In yer mind seems a welcoming treat.

Two minutes silence brings tears to the minces
As red poppies stand free in the wind
Drunks streaming in stand shoulders back listening
For outrage. But no one today dares to sing.

To tumultuous applause, yer rubbing yer hands
Trying in vain to get warm
As pensioners in red, and troops from Afghanistan
Remind you of the many who’ve fallen.

An accident waiting to happen
We were continually riding our luck
Our keeper was saving each effort slung at him
Till his line of cleans sheets kissed the mud.

At nil one we hung out the white flags
Our heads like the cliche dropped down
Nil two stirred up anger amongst the home fans
Nil three? An exodus was leaving our ground.

Them Mackems destroyed us to lay down their ghost
Of failing to win on our ground
And we’ve shed load of reasons, lame excuses and prose
For failing to turn the game round.

Old familiar shouts rang out loud in the night sky
“Ancellotti you’re a total disgrace”
Tempers flared up almost causing a few fist fights
As scared kids looked on, embarrassed by dad’s angry face.

As I’d debated going to “The Football” that morning
When I first saw the rain lashing down
I’m glad that I did to at least show my respect for the fallen
Though in defeat I’ve lost respect for some of those in our crowd!
