Here’s To The Team. (For My Wyatt)

Even back then he was something special
This kid
What we struggled to do with a ball
He could do with his eyes closed
Twelve or thirteen years of age, he would have been.

Lauded by some top youth clubs
Over in South East London, and used to winning things
Our problem with him in school
Was that he wouldn’t turn out on a Saturday
In 2nd eleven league games for us, where we really struggled.

Until our enthusiastic scratch team
Managed to get in to
The semi-final of a cup competition
That was
Then he suddenly became interested in playing for us.

When the eleven names went up
On the school notice board
For that coming Saturday mornings game
He was absolutely livid
His name didn’t even make the reserves.

Brazenly, he took the sports master to task
“Sir, I’m easily the best player in the year
So how come
I’m not in the team
For this Saturdays cup tie?”

“You’re absolutely right son,
You’re easily the best player in the year,
Who when selected to play
In those earlier rounds
Simply refused to turn up.”

“So the boys
Who’ve turned up every week?
Are the ones playing?
On Saturday morning
and that’s the end of it”.

We lost the match,
Oh how that defeat hurt
However what helped ease the hurt
Was Mr Wyatt’s total allegiance to the team.
Sticking by those of us
Who’d turned up every week, and giving us a game
When it would have been easy to drop any one of us
In the quest for shallow glory.
