The reality hits you, it’s hard to expect,
I’d have been dreaming too.
If you get a twinge while you’re playing for England,
What’s the best thing to do?

“I ought to come off!” he might have thought.
“But, what are they going to say?”
He may have glanced towards the bench,
but it looked such a long way away.

Did he forget for a minute, think he’s shaken it off?
It seemed to stop pulling like before.
Did he get caught up in being one-nil down
and priority of helping them to score?

Did the time fly by and he didn’t realise,
just how much trouble he was brewing?
Oblivious to the fact, that the tighter the knot,
the longer takes the undoing.

Did he not consider: back home, tomorrow
and the physio’s disappointed expression?
Or the fact that putting England first,
might give the wrong impression?

Did he think about the problems at the club
that his injury might increase?
Or was he just seeing the England cap
placed on the mantle piece?

I wonder what goes through their minds,
I suppose I’ll never know!
Don’t kill yourself for England,
when the man at home lets you go!
