One Who Never Made It

He wanted to be a centre back,
He tried to be dominating,
He tried to snuff out each attack
But found it intimidating.

Whene’er he urged the line to move,
The other three ignored him.
E’en with time, it did not improve,
His timidity did not reward him.

His manager saw what the problem was,
And said, with some unpleasance,
“You’re like a poor child at Christmas, ‘cos
You just don’t have any presence.”
