Pogba at eighty nine mill
We’re assured is an absolute steal
Though a red faced Govan knight
Who had the foresight to bid him bye bye
Will be gutted he sold him for zilch!

Like some lumberjack hipster From London’s gentrified East-end He entered the fray from the bench Stuck a swift deuce away Straight up saved the day Cynics amongst us enthused, (Me included to boot) Bout resurgent French striker Giroud, “Still, at least he ain’t playing, scoring for them* Mind you…if he’s half as good as Cashley […]

In a pub – I occasionally frequent – t’other night No sooner had I stepped inside I heard – two usually charming – blue-rinses Having imbibed three or four Guinness’s Being told by the land-lord, “Any more from you pair, you’re barred, tis bye-bye” A ruckus being replayed up on screen Caused a bit of […]

T’was a sad day yesterday Bidding au revior to Ray A youngster when as captain of our team His maturity, finesse, Showed it wasn’t just the older heads Knew how to encourage, listen, cajole, scream. I’m reminded of Gay Meadow away In the Danny Blanchflower twilight days Borassic, with a team of kids out on […]

Sat watching a match In the club, over drinks, with the chaps I listened avidly to what they had to say… About a blinding new sport Currently the talk Of every couch potato, lives round our way. Judging by what the chaps said Heart, lungs, pulse rate, pasty white legs Commence pumping like they did […]

Meandering out when the whistle had blown Shaking our heads we’re amazed Couldn’t Adam n Eve we played so bad at home Awful, a bleatin disgrace. Throats sorely taut from the shouting Of verbally trying to spur the team on Vocal chords expressing serious self doubt in Our angst of those last shallow songs. Hurling […]

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

With you all the way on the abolition of FA Cup replays. What are they doing to the game?
