We are august even though it isn’t August
We are delighted to say that we have been included in the glossy Citizenship Brochure given to delegates at the recent conference at Old Trafford; we are on the same page as the DfES; OFSTED; QCA; the Holocaust Educational Trust; the Institute of Race Relations; the Refugee Council; the Association for Citizenship Teaching etc., etc.. This is yet another unsolicited plaudit and is the result of the talented and responsible approach shown by you, our dear and esteemed contributors. We have built an electonic community of responsible citizens here – many thanks to you again. And to finish on an Augustan note, who better than Denys Jones?
A Defence of Football Poesy
Some poets treat of lofty themes,
Like Love, Desire and Hate.
Of sour, dashed hopes and broken dreams,
Of hearts that pine and wait.
There’s bards that brood on graves and tombs,
On bones and food for worms.
On grim-faced Death, our Common Doom,
And even Grecian Urns.
And some tell of the passing year,
Of Summer, Winter, Spring.
The highs and lows, the swings in mood
Each changing Season brings.
‘Tis they that do of rosebuds sing,
Of hay and wilting flowers.
Of youth’s fresh hue, of morning dew,
And April’s short-lived showers.
Still others make their subject War:
Swords, guns, smoke, guts and blood.
The heroes or white-liver’d funks,
The trenches, gas and mud.
And certain wracked, tormented souls,
They end up half-insane,
Through wailing on Life’s bitter woes,
Age, Sickness, Loss and Pain.
But if our Output you peruse,
You’ll seek such stuff in vain.
The Round Ball is our only Muse,
We’ve Footie on the brain!
The plastic-coated leathern sphere
Is what grabs our attention.
We cover every aspect of the Game
You care to mention.
Yet just below the surface delve,
You’ll find as much emotion
As in the works of Keats or Yeats,
Of Dickinson or…Motion.

Hi Crispin. Chris Sutton on the radio has gone for a Chelsea v Coventry final. As we know anything can happen in the Cup, and I reckon we can go to the final.
We’re still in with a chance of the play offs too, so lots to go for.

Hey Kev
Let the masses drool over their odds on City v Unted Final, but who knows how pressure can hit.
Cov and Chels will be rightly labelled as having no chance..but hey …stranger things have happened..
so Chelsea v Coventry…that’s the Final for us!

Hi Crispin,
How are you doing mate? Yes, you’re probably right but hey football is all about emotion and passion and I just love writing about the game. I try to keep my poetry to a reasonable length but there’s so much to write about the game and its literature just lends itself naturally to poetry. Sometimes I just get completely carried and I do apologise for the length of my poetry but it’s a great thrill to be associated with Football Poets.
Cheers mate

There’s something so evocative and nostalgic for football fans the world over, in ‘revisiting’ old lost grounds.
Occasionally some remnants remain, with perhaps part of a wall or part or a stand or thre shape of a terrace, but often they are only still there in faded images and in our heads..
Great stuff Graham

Today B.B.C post on F.B was titled:Premier League reduced to 18 clubs? I really think it may be interesting to see if this would be Everton’s nightmare and this poem is well suited for this concern. If there would be more difficult battle to stay if there were 18 teams.Great poem and somehow true.
