1………..SUNDAY JUNE 19TH 2005 ………………………….
Steaming 2 hour session with Pupils of Westminster Cathedral School at Pimlico Library.A session about Chelsea v Moscow Dynamo 1945, in which we acted out ,looked at football artefacts and pictures, discussed and then wrote some fun poems, which we then read, performed and sang (!) together…in 90 degrees heat!
UNITED FOREVER AGAIN
I remember the day
When my dad came home
From several long years of the War
My mum was crying
To see him again
As he walked back through our door
He dropped his sack
Swung me on his back
And said we’re off to football
Smiling he said
We’ll go the match
Mother daughter and all
I remember the day like yesterday
The women the children the men
When soldiers and families came together
United forever again

I love this poem so much. Written about the pivotal Chelsea v Moscow Dynamo game. Played on 13th Nov 1945. Over 100,000 crammed into Stamford Bridge, risking life and limb, lining rooves and touchlines to see the Russians. With the War barely 3 months over, soldiers and sailors and airforcemen were returning. The way Rachel has approached and written this poem , really moved all of us. I also read it aloud on Rachel’s behalf ,to an audience of stunned teachers and club officials at Chelsea’s ground earlier this week.CT

DO YOU RECALL THE THIRTEENTH OF NOVEMBER ?
Do You Recall the thirteenth of November?
1945 can you remember?
To Stamford Bridge the crowd was pourimg
To see Lawton score a goal
Sha La La- La La La La La
Sha La La- La La La La La
Sha La La- La La La La La
To see Lawton crack one in
Do you remember the paratrooper
On the roof the view was super
Fell through the glass in a drunken stupor
And landed in an empty seat
Sha La La- La La La La La
Sha La La- La La La La La
Sha La La- La La La La La
He landed in an empty seat

1945
The war is over
The soldiers gather to see
The game of the year
Moscow v Chelsea
Greeted at Stamford Bridge
with a bunch of flowers
The Chelsea crowd
Had waited for hours
Tommy Lawtron
Scored the first goal
The Chelsea crowd cheered
With heart and soul
Moscow had their penalty
And it was a very good one
The match ends with
A score of 3-3
for Moscow
And Chelsea

At The Shed End
At the Shed end it all goes on
Chanting cheering all day long
At the Shed end rain or sun
It doesn’t matter we’re having fun
At the Shed end we just can’t bear
When they score we shout out there
At the Shed end we are the crowd
The players love it becasue we’re loud
At the Shed end we all choose
To cheer the Blues win or lose

CHELSEA 1945 Acrostic
Champions of Russia flew into town
Heading for the football ground
Everyone wanted to see the game
Legends with their Russian names
Soloviev took the penalty
Everybody was standing quietly
As it bounced off a fan so suddenly!

Show me The Way To Chelsea v Moscow
When the day was dawning
On that lovely Tuesday morning
All the crowds were chanting
We want to see the football match
sha la la- la la la la la…
sha la la- la la la la la…
sha la la- la la la la la…
We want to see the football match
They were locked out from the ground
There were thousands all around
They were making a colossal sound
To see the Moscow play Chelsea
sha la la- la la la la la…
sha la la- la la la la la…
sha la la- la la la la la…
To see the Moscow play Chelsea
One of them was a paratroooper
On the roof the view was super
he was in a drunken stupor
And then he fell through the glass roof..
sha la la- la la la la la…
sha la la- la la la la la…
sha la la- la la la la la…
but landed in an empty street
Show me The Way To Chelsea v Moscow
I’ve just got back and I might get lost – o
And I don’t care how much it costs-o
I want to see the football match!

MOSCOW DYNAMO Acrostic
Moscow is a long way from here
On the 13th November 1945
Soldiers arrived to see the Dynamo
Cheering with happiness that were a still alive
Outside the gates the chaos reigned
War was over and they longed to see the game
Dynamo gave the Chelsea squad flowers
Young boys passed down the front for hours
Now they can see perfectly
As Dynamo take their penalty
Massive crowds way back then
One day will we ever see them again?

On A Winter Morning
on a winter morning
with their rattles the crowd were singing
they were going to Stamford Bridge
to see the Moscow Dynamo
sha la la la la la la la..
sha la la la la la la la
sha la la la la la la la
to see the Moscow Dynamo
the gates were closed and that was that
some of them broke into a flat
they only wanted to see the match
and see them play against Chelsea
sha la la la la la la la..
sha la la la la la la la
sha la la la la la la la
to see them play against Chelsea

We Love Football (We Will Rock You)
Dynamo were in town
down at the football ground
everyone was waiting to see them play
the ground was packed
oh what a match
rattles and scarves
and blue and white hats
because
we love
we love
football..
football’s cool -football’s cool
we love
we love
football..
football’s cool -football’s cool

Stuart, you are not alone, in your dichotomy of doubt
but without dissention
you stand alone
in hogging our attention!

Well said Crispin. One of the reasons for The Ball 2022/23 is exactly this – that FIFA need to know. The Ball is essentially a petition to FIFA to honour their commitments to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. They signed up; they should act. The Qatar tournament takes the World Cup in the opposite direction to that commitment. And 2026 looks like it’ll be even worse.

Hi Guys
Re ‘Lets Boycott Qatar ‘ poem
You probably hate me banging on..and problably know (like me) that my/your not watching the World Cup in Qatar will make no difference.
Of course it won’t. That’s not the point.
OK someone might possibly eventually publish a minimal drop in terrestrial TV viewer numbers, but I fear that is unlikely.
But please above all, do go on writing poems about the World Cup, as/you we have always done. I hate to think a poem or two of mine might l make you feel bad about comenting on a game or country …or that I’ve put you all off about wanting to contribute.
So we’d love to hear from you and read your thoughts and observations, as ever on what’s going on.
Some of us have been here since Football Poets website birth/inception for the Euros 2000 ….
All my best wishes
Crispin

Shoot! (Something we’ve also been screaming in vain at our team all season !)
Great memories Joe . Before Shoot, it was Roy of the Rovers comic too, dropping through my letterbox.
Anxiously waiting each week to see if they survived in the mexcian jungle after an ambush..or a pre-season earthquake!

Thanks for the kind words Sharon. Yes, it was a shame with Billy Shako, but with five subs now being allowed, he might yet make it off the bench. Even if it’s just a cameo to close out a poem.

John, your new book is an absolute delight and more please. It’s a shame ‘Swapping Shirts With Shakespeare’ never made it off the bench, but quality football poets light up the writing fields like Roman candles. Go well.

Great memories Greg. Took me right back.
Today I stand on a small terrace in the hills where I live watching Forest Green Rovers in L1, and keep up with Chelsea on highlights. It’s a far cry and a world away from those times when I lived as a child within walking distance of ‘The Bridge’ – just off the Ifield Road, which led to Fulham Road. The Blues were rubbish for so long, but we loved them and somehow we stayed in the old First Division for so many seasons. And of course we got to see Greavesie at his impudent best, scoring goals for fun. Mad unpredictable games where we’d score 4 and let in five.
The looming floodlights in the dark and mist on magic night games. The big games when the ground heaved.
I don’t think we ever realized how magical and incredible it was back then. The atmosphere and arriving there so early – like you said.. just to make sure you got in. Back when Bovril, tea and cake and roasted peanuts for sixpence a back were just about all on offer.
Good times.
