T’would have been about nineteen sixty
When this bug first got a hold
I remember that me mates and me
Played great matches down our road.

Then the council knocked our street down
That meandered down to the Thames
They built a concrete jungle on our football ground

We moved on to a new estate
Where our “flats” were all the rage
Only now we played our beautiful games
Enclosed, inside a wire cage.

We were Springett, Yashin, Banks
We were Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Greaves

The Mighty Magyars on show at Wemberly
That’s the kind of geographical stuff

Some cool teachers taught me a discipline
How to enjoy our game and play by the rules
Why even Albert Camus himself has said
