Sale of the Benchery

It’s the unmissable summer sale
Clearance prices, everyone must go
The faithful defender who rose like a salmon
To clear that goalbound volley
Unfortunately it was only a five foot two salmon
And they scored
The reliable ‘keeper, no longer a gangly youth
But an experienced india rubber band
Sticking out a giant gloved hand
In the manner of a lollipop man
Trying to stop a truck with a plywood stick
Your local boy striker
Who never quite struck
He just never had the luck
Now the nearly men are leaving
Verdegris memories of silky skills
Worming their way into a new club
To be someone elses hero
And we’ll spend all next season wondering
Why we ever let him go
