Some People Are On The Pitch

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Saturday July 30th 1966
England versus West Germany
The World Cup Final
I was twelve years old.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Mum and Dad and the dog
I’m lying down on the carpet
Sister is upstairs in her room
It’s three o’clock in the afternoon.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 The Germans score an early goal
Remember Dad swearing at the telly
Mum going to put the kettle on
Me, I’m thinking we’re going to lose.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Then Geoff Hurst gets the equaliser
Me and Dad and the dog make some noise
Sound of cups being dropped in the kitchen
Upstairs my sister’s listening to the Beatles.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Into the second half and nothing
to seperate both the teams.
Until Peters smashes home the ball
All but my sister are leaping about.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 But with just a minute to go
The Germans go and equalise
Dad’s swearing loudly at the telly again
I think me and Mum were near to tears.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 So it went into extra-time
All but my sister on the edge of the settee
YES ! The ball has crossed the line
We’re all hugging each other again.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 “Come on ref blow your whistle
surely the Germans won’t score again ? ”
“Some people are on the pitch,
they think it’s all over, it is now ! ”

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 England four West Germany two
We’ve won the World Cup Final
Me, Mum and Dad, and the crazy dog
Outside on the street with all the neighbours.

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 ( Sister still in her bedroom )

Notes

I ‘ve tried to set the scene in our house on that momentous day.
Even though it was all those years ago, I can recall it lucidly.
It brought families and neighbours together, the whole of Coventry and England went football crazy !
All but my sister that is, we have had a laugh about it now, especially when she said back then : What’s all the fuss about ?
In her defence though, the Beatles were a bit special too !
