The Libero

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The match that night was stunning
Exotic with allure
There’s something about a libero
That’s beautiful for sure

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 He’ll push the team
Up from the back
Like a general and his tanks
Then he’ll create sheer pandemonium
In the opposition’s ranks

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Intelligence is paramount
To this form of attack
The maestro who conducts it
Must have cunning, guile and tact!

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 In Florence, one Sunday afternoon
Juventus came to play
What I saw them perform there
Is still with me, to this day!

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Wave after wave of Viola play
Failed to break deadlock
When one Old Lady stalwart
Gave the home fans such a shock

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 He picked the ball up
On his eighteen yard line
Then went off on a run
Two or three one two’s
With team-mates
Left Fiorentina stunned

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 In what had seemed like seconds
He was in the Viola’s box
Passed the ball to Paulo Rossi
Who was sniffing like a fox!

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Rossi scored, Juve fans roared
Viola fans said prayers
In full flow, a libero
Is a master stroke that scares

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 The conductor of this classic counter attack
Who thrilled us all stood there?
Juve’s late lamented truly brilliant
Libero and captain, Gaetano Scirea!

Notes

This just took my breath away, never seen this type of system played as an art form before. This bloke was captain of Italy and Juventus, he had a brain as sharp as a tack, when you’ve got that in your head, who needs pace?

The Dutch boy Ruud Krol was another terrific exponent of this system, if my memory serves me well.

A clever libero plays one or two passes and he’s in the oppositions box, really cool and great to watch, when played by these type of intelligent players, who can also extend their careers playing a system that is all about brain, rather than brawn!

peace.

kev.
