The Season We All Believed.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The rain has cleared and victory denied
the summit too lofty, the river too wide
We burnt our wings flying too close to the sun
The moment of glory was over before it began
But let’s not start our story at the end
Let’s tell this tale from the beginning my friends

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The point of a journey is not to arrive
So our feet began the eager drive
To far flung East in virgin lands
is where we made our opening stand
All was well, a battle won
Still the journey had just begun

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 We bowed are heads in ancient Rome
Wounded, scarred we made it home
and when we won in neutral lands
yet harder tasks were still at hand

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Again we faced an Eastern Bear
Champion strong who danced with flare
For half an hour he had his way
We all knew though he would be made to pay
Big Bad Bob then cocked an ear
Finally at last we all could hear
His deadly arrow had found its mark
The bear defeated, forced to depart

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 We took our journey to southern lands
to meet the Old Lady with wizened hands
Her deadly embrace nearly crushed our hearts
It was us who were made to eventually depart
The Old Lady proud, followed us home
No doubt to dance upon our broken bone
Three times though we pegged her back
and then delivered the final attack

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 From the banks of the Thames down to the sea
across foreign lands to the land of the free
You’ll see white shirts just as proud as we
Their Eagle adorned in black and white
was about to save us on that stupendous night
The eagle swooped out of the London sky
and delivered a blow with grace and guile
The lady was beaten, bowed in defeat
We now turned to face the Germanic elite

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 They called upon volcanic gods in northern lands
but all were dashed upon the rocks of mighty Hangeland
Our heroes stood tall in rigid form
and 3 times repelled the German storm
One tornado did get near
and whistled past Mark’s right ear

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 The night grew long and we began to fear
until a single voice was heard so clear
His frustration flashed across the darkened sky
He stood and let out a mighty cry
These are the words he said to me
Stand up if you still believe

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 The voice was heard and we answered his call
Our heroes knew now that they never would fall
We watch a Welsh wizard with a legend’s name
Twist and turn and put us back in the game
The magic and wonder of what we had just seen
could only have come straight from Pele’s dreams

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 The storm was broken and knew it was beat
its final wreckage lay at Zolton’s feet
We clapped and cheered to the darkened sky
We will never forget that single cry

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 And now the music has stopped
There’s only the sound of the rain
all the hope and glory, the sacrifice in vain
Our heroes defeated, consoled by Roy
Not many left to witness the Spanish joy

12 Leave a comment on verse 12 0 But before you walk home in pain
I wondered if you did the same
I looked above into the night
and witnessed there a mighty sight

13 Leave a comment on verse 13 0 All adorned in glorious white
They watched above us on that fateful night
Past fathers, sons, daughters, mums
Yes they are the chosen ones
The Maestro stood at their head proud to see
for this was the season we all believed

14 Leave a comment on verse 14 0 So stand up tall and let out a cheer
and save a place for that forgotten tear
For once more I will say to thee
Stand up if you still believe

Editors note :

Great epic poem Billy and welcome to The Football Poets.

Lily Allen crying in the stands and the Juventus game stick in my memory.

This heartfelt poem also takes pride of place in our Football memories section.

More please and keep on.
