I cannot speak of other hearts
The tears the joys the loss
I cannot name the unknown ones
Nor count the cost
What is gone the sights the smells
The sounds that taste forgot
The meek the mild the often […] -

I have lived out my life drenched in football
By the games that the Reds won or lost
And I have valued those days of my youth
But I have never measured the cost
I had long thought the butterflies flown […] -

Give us back footballers of a different breed
High flying skills aye, but take back the greed
Wearing the shirt for the pride not the fame
Kids out on the parks not a PlayStation game
We reclaim our clubs […] -

Football is mausoleum sans fans
The stadiums mere hollow caverns of bricks and mortar
An abyss of deathly silence
And then on match day it’s sheer umbilical
The very concrete quivers with excitement […] -

The beautiful feral wild creature that is the terrace,
nothing like that swaying wall of unadulterated noise
the big wide hungry heart that gives and gives again
breathing life into the gameAnd it’s not […]

He gets the crowd up when he shoots
He twists he spins he sways and swoops
He’ll grab a brace of goals the noo!
Along with Jackson, Clark, McConn
You know he’ll score ano […] -

We’re easily pleased us football fans
We don’t dote on silver and gold
Just a player who puts in a decent shift
And every now and then a half decent goalWe love the blokes who huff and puff around the pit […]

The town is culture to a core
Blue or red through Lennon’s door
The Cavern stage is set to see
Another saint, so let it be
The snarling wisdom, sarky verbs
My teenage years summed up in verse
Yea A […] -

Footballers are immortal
They live forever
In the memories of goals
And the most sublime of passes
Re-created from the archives of youth
They race like Gericault’s colts across the pitch
With our dreams […] -

Oh, the passion and madness of football
The saints and the sinners we love
The golden gods seated above us
With their bright boots and warm knitted glovesThe swaying of life is an ocean
From terrace to […] -

It’s a superb tribute to one of the finest footballers to grace the game, and a lovely gentleman too.

Poured through each finger
And ripped through the sky

Impossible angles

An elegant pause in the light

Hi Denys…
Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .
Best
Crispin

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

Shouldn’t your title read your poem Farewell Europe England to everyone exccept Aston Villa ?
I know you mention them in your poem , but I do feel sorry for Villa re the national press .
Largely ignored. the hype was was all about Man City & Arsenal with a bit of a nod to the Hammers..but hardly a mention of Villa..
So well done to them

Hi Crispin. Chris Sutton on the radio has gone for a Chelsea v Coventry final. As we know anything can happen in the Cup, and I reckon we can go to the final.
We’re still in with a chance of the play offs too, so lots to go for.
