Play Up Sky Blues
First game of season
it feels great to be back home
amongst fellow fans.
Supporters singing
the atmosphere electric
a sea of sky blue.
First half to Forest
they score the opening goal
a good one as well.
City leave it late
but draw level near the end
away team pressured.
In injury time
the home side score a second
supporters go nuts.
Three points on return
we’re back home in Coventry
so play up Sky Blues.
The Fan With The Flask
The season is ending
a strange one without doubt,
being played behind closed doors
no fans seen or heard to shout.
Football needs it’s supporters
the lifeblood of the beautiful game,
they belong inside our stadiums
without fans football is not the same.
Let people back in next season
making sure they are all safe and sound,
instead of pumping in fake noise
you’ll have real atmosphere in the ground.
No more of those cardboard cut outs
sat there emotionless in a seat,
they can’t go through a fans real feelings
when they watch a last minute defeat.
So it’ll be good to see that bloke again
wearing his colours with his well used flask,
shouting and swearing at the referee
but with his face hidden behind a mask !
The Sky Blues Are Back
Jimmy Hill came to Coventry in the 60’s
who were a lowly third division team,
he promised a football miracle
with his amazing sky blue dream.
Some fans thought it was all a gimmick
my dad said that he won’t last long,
but when his sides kept on winning
he went and proved them all wrong.
He got us up to the old first division
with exciting all action play,
crowds flocked to Highfield Road
atmosphere electric on a match day.
Now we’ve got a similar manager
who’s also turned things around,
he’s got us back to the Championship
and as a club without it’s own ground.
And well done to all of the players
Every one of you are a star,
and of course to Mark Robins
what a top manager you are.
So Coventry City are on the up
and back where they belong,
us fans are happy and jubilant
and all singing the Sky Blue Song !
You Couldn’t Make It Up
The draw was being made
for the fourth round of the FACup,
Coventry or Bristol Rovers against Birmingham
” you couldn’t make it up. ”
Coventry will be the ” home” team
If they knock Rovers out of the Cup,
so the Brummies will be the ” away” side
” you couldn’t make it up. ”
The Sky Blues currently ground share St Andrews
and in their pubs Cov fans now do sup,
a somewhat strange scenario ?
” you couldn’t make it up. ”
The crazy world of football
and a bizarre tie in the FACup ?
If Coventry City are at ” home ” to Birmingham
” you couldn’t make it up ! ”
“
A Rollercoaster Ride
Crowds packs in tight
at night floodlights on,
watching my team Coventry City
and yet another game won.
Rattles and rosettes
decked out in sky blue,
our player nets a hat trick
and on his debut.
Jimmy Hill is our manager
what a breath of fresh air,
we now play football
with skill, style, and flair.
He gets us into the top flight
just as he said he would,
Highfield Road is our home
us supporters are feeling good.
Fast forward to the present
and to the year of 2019,
but what a rollercoaster ride
being a fan it has been.
We are again ground sharing
playing “home” games away,
you have to go to St Andrews
to watch the City play.
Yet they are currently unbeaten
so they’re going really well,
but can they keep it up ?
it’s far too early to tell.
But fingers and toes crossed
and to the football Gods we pray,
that Coventry City get promoted
in that merry month of May !
Playing Home Games Away
First game of a new season
always a fans delight,
make plans for the Saturday
excited on the Friday night.
Meet mates in the boozer
before going to the ground,
talk football between drinks
“don’t forget it’s your round.”
‘Reckon we’ll have a good campaign
and see us near to the top,
‘nah, we’re going to struggle
think we are going to drop. ‘
So we all head off to the match
it feels good to be back,
even though your team are rubbish
and hardly go on the attack.
But remember it’s a marathon
and not just a short sprint,
a season is a long one
which can leave you totally skint.
So you may lose your first fixture
leaving you a little bit glum,
but at least you’re not Coventry City
who will be playing “home” games away in Brum !

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.

Hi Denys…
Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

Hi Denys
With you all the way on the abolition of FA Cup replays. What are they doing to the game?
