On Celtic Reaching The UEFA Cup Final

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Eyes, prised wide with white,
full moons of wonder,
bloodhound the ball,
transfixed by it’s geometry.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Mouths, wound round in sound,
black holes of mystery,
gasp in universal unison
at the oh, so close.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Then Larsson,
The King of Kings,
traps the ball,
sidesteps a defender,

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 draws back his golden boot,
and drills a low, hard shot
deep into the bottom corner
bulging the net.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 A volcanic eruption
of viscerality
shrieks up, out and away
into the starlit sky

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 filling the void
with a kaleidoscope of colour.
What once was empty –
the humdrum,

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 the bland, the grey,
the routine and order,
the everyday –
fills full with meaning.

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 Don’t tell me
it’s “jist a gemme”.
For the working man
it’s La Boheme.

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Seville awaits.
History dawns.
Lionhearts pound the cage.
The world looks on.

Notes

Although I write lots of poetry, this is one of the few that is about football. However, having watched Celtic triumph in midweek against Boavista, I felt compelled to express my delight in poetry. It’s still a work-in-progress (as are Celtic), but I think it encapsulates the joy felt by so many Celtic fans at reaching the UEFA Cup Final.
