Across the ground, a pause as still as the years that follow. Matchday chat falls to the pit where lost apple pips lie – feel them stretch into this emptiness, burst into boughs, touch all sides of this amphitheatre struck dumb. A crowded silence can seem so deathless. Watch the whistle rise, embrace the explosion.
We just wanted to play football. While the rest of the boys in our year were out with girls (or at least claiming to be), we were on the hunt for makeshift goal posts. The bins round the back of the school. Two saplings planted up in the park. The garage doors at the top […]
Gareth Bale, Wales vs. Slovakia, Euro 2016 Group B, Bordeaux, France, 11th June 2016 He’s hit free kicks before. Lifted them over memories of spurned chances, missed penalties. Bent them round the shadows of an unjust sporting past: an East German and his missing flag, a toothless Scot’s veiled fist. Some nestled in side-netting, while […]
Swansea City vs. Wrexham, FAW Premier Cup Final, 11th May 2005 On your deathbed we stripped you – ripped out red plastic seats and advertisement boards like thieves stealing gold from fresh bodies. The Vetch clock, not yet stopped but definitely slowing, tick-tocked our final minutes away as Roger Evans, muffled by soot, whispered down […]

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

Hi Joe
Shouldn’t your title read your poem Farewell Europe England to everyone exccept Aston Villa ?
I know you mention them in your poem , but I do feel sorry for Villa re the national press .
Largely ignored. the hype was was all about Man City & Arsenal with a bit of a nod to the Hammers..but hardly a mention of Villa..
So well done to them

Hi Crispin. Chris Sutton on the radio has gone for a Chelsea v Coventry final. As we know anything can happen in the Cup, and I reckon we can go to the final.
We’re still in with a chance of the play offs too, so lots to go for.

Hey Kev
Let the masses drool over their odds on City v Unted Final, but who knows how pressure can hit.
Cov and Chels will be rightly labelled as having no chance..but hey …stranger things have happened..
so Chelsea v Coventry…that’s the Final for us!
Best
