Austria leave proud
forced to find another gear
Italy march on
Day 7 Euro 2020 haiku
now well in the mix
early scares are put to rest
As Ukraine edge on

in a wall of sound
Austria are rolled aside
By a strong Oranje
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
with emotions high
Belgian class the difference here
as Denmark stand tall

as brave Balkans fade ~

on Austria:
with the stars they have
ev’ry time the question comes
why can’t they win games?

who knows what they hold ?
like your fav’rite choc’late box
tempting to delight

on Croatia:
always one to fear
Modric still the playmaker
for Petkovic’s pace
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
on Czech Replublic:
solid in defence
working hard with their high press..
but can they score goals?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
on Denmark:
nice pastries aside
Schmeichel governs at the back
Eriksen still sparks

on England:
time to dream again
with that blind faith we all share..
but can we surprise?

on Finland:
making history
Nordic pride and sheer belief
in their first time here

on France:
endless stars on show
like a Paris sky by night
ev’rywhere you glance

on Germany:
like some prowling cat
do they purr as loud these days?
so hard to predict
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
on Hungary:
hit by injuries
Magyars need to settle fast
in their group of death
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
on Italy:
on the cusp once more
like some sweeping Roman march
could this be their time?

on Netherlands:
it’s been quite a while
since their Orange floodlight shone
always hard to call..

on North Macedonia:
newboys on the block
Balkan fever drives them on
in their first time here

on Poland:
Polish Eagle dreams
rest upon Lewandowski..
will this be his year?

ever one to watch
driven on by pride and hope
and Ronaldo’s touch

World Cup hosts last time
rebuilding has been the key
to their presence here

in their red hot group
Tartan Army’s hopes rest on

at odds with their fans
Falcons need to play with heart
if they’re to progress

always in the mix
like flamenco without shoes
dancing quietly

on Sweden:
no Zlatan this time
Lindelof and Larsson shine
in this tricky side

on Switzerland :
Alpine mysteries
with Embolo’s pace and strength
never count them out

on Turkey:
fearless as their fans
passioned grit but can they gel
in a daunting group ?

on Ukraine:
Shevchenko’s dark horse
fans expect progression here
will they meet their hopes?

not one to dismiss
semi-finalists in France
can they rise again?

Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

Shouldn’t your title read your poem Farewell Europe England to everyone exccept Aston Villa ?
I know you mention them in your poem , but I do feel sorry for Villa re the national press .
Largely ignored. the hype was was all about Man City & Arsenal with a bit of a nod to the Hammers..but hardly a mention of Villa..
So well done to them

Hi Crispin. Chris Sutton on the radio has gone for a Chelsea v Coventry final. As we know anything can happen in the Cup, and I reckon we can go to the final.
We’re still in with a chance of the play offs too, so lots to go for.

Let the masses drool over their odds on City v Unted Final, but who knows how pressure can hit.
Cov and Chels will be rightly labelled as having no chance..but hey …stranger things have happened..
so Chelsea v Coventry…that’s the Final for us!
