Le Boss

You stand quietly just away from the shadows
The red of your scarf catches the light
And draws it down
And those football eyes shine
Unscramble the mysticism of tactics
Each lunge measured
Each trailing leg counted
Each goal scored and stored
Replayed Replayed Replayed
And now with Shankly
To be just a boy again
With your mates on The Kop
Singing your name.

Gérard Houllier 1947-2020

Alsop Comprehensive, Liverpool
The student walked the walk
Houllier’s first game at Anfield
Ten goal battering of Dundalk

Made Anfield a fortress again
He made the Reds soar high
Five trophies at the helm
And the UEFA final battle cry

‘Today you play
‘For a place in history
‘Today you play
‘For immortality!’

Merci Monsieur
Tu ne marcheras jamais seul
