The Pessimistic Predictor
I know with predictions you can eat what you say
ENGLAND EXPECTS
Things to go – England’s way
But here’s what I think
coach Southgate will preach
When they lose in the quarters
then head to the beach.
“The players they were tired they’d all had a long season
I’m not making excuses but it seems a good reason.
The lads were magnificent they gave all that they had.
To go out on those spots kicks was so very sad.
We practiced pen-os in training
We marked all our cards
But you won’t beat the Germans
when the balls at twelve yards.
We all feel for young Declan
He’s got the support of the group
But he’ll now get a commercial
Advertising Rice and bean soup.
We’ll regroup and move on
it will make us much stronger
England will lift up a trophy
Sooner rather than longer
We’ll Make England Great
I know it sounds Presidential
But it will be next year in Qatar
When we’ll reach our potential.”
Then a pressman storms in
And shouts from the back
Do you know Gareth
You’ve just got the sack?
The Magic Waistcoat
England win a penalty shoot out
now I don’t want to gloat,
but the secret behind it ?
Gareth Southgate’s waistcoat.
Colombia played really dirty
they went for our players throat,
but the Three Lions stayed cool
all down to Gareth’s waistcoat.
Our supporters all love him
he really rocks their boat,
not just for his coaching skills
but more for his trendy waistcoat.
If Southgate wanted to be Prime Minister
he’d certainly get my vote,
not for his political views
I just like his waistcoat.
So if we win the World Cup
it would be an achievement of great note,
and the reason for the success ?
Gareth Southgates magic waistcoat !

Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.

Hi Joe
Shouldn’t your title read your poem Farewell Europe England to everyone exccept Aston Villa ?
I know you mention them in your poem , but I do feel sorry for Villa re the national press .
Largely ignored. the hype was was all about Man City & Arsenal with a bit of a nod to the Hammers..but hardly a mention of Villa..
So well done to them

Hi Crispin. Chris Sutton on the radio has gone for a Chelsea v Coventry final. As we know anything can happen in the Cup, and I reckon we can go to the final.
We’re still in with a chance of the play offs too, so lots to go for.

Hey Kev
Let the masses drool over their odds on City v Unted Final, but who knows how pressure can hit.
Cov and Chels will be rightly labelled as having no chance..but hey …stranger things have happened..
so Chelsea v Coventry…that’s the Final for us!
Best
