To Clap or Boo The Knee ?

it feels unbelievable
to follow such a year
where football played to empty stands
without the fans to cheer
you’d think that when we can return
we’d just be glad to be
but as some players make a stand
they clap or boo the knee

a simple act well meaning
that somehow now divides
and questions us to fathom out
the feelings on both sides
and though it’s just a fleeting kneel
I know which side I’m on
but others feel dictated to
so who is right or wrong ?

“keep your statement to yourselves”
I’ve heard detractors cry
as even several players now
begin to question why
and some may call it ignorance
but call it what you may
this racism still has no place
within our world today

and though we try to our best
to educate and change
this feeling seems to linger on
and mars our special game
whatever’s at the heart of it
whatever else we do?
we’re all the same but in the end
some clap and some will boo

the sounds that we’re so used to
like taunting referees
the banter with away fans
the songs and chants that tease
but still I find it crazy
and you may not agree
but after all that we’ve been through
there’s one thing clear to me …

how sad if our return is marked
and spoilt to some degree
and if the biggest question’s still..
to clap or boo the knee?
