France & Belgium Semis Bound -Day 20
Europe holds the cards
France and Belgium semis bound
in this mad World Cup
Uruguay 0-2 France
such a strong display
France begin to look the part
wil they go the course?
always in control
one sweet touch and one mistake
sees Les Bleus march on
stripped of Cavani
Uruguay end below par
for their hordes of fans
Brazil 1-2 Belgium
should we be surprised?
De Bruyne and Lukaku
power Belgians through
passion and belief
tactics heart and Belgian strength
sends Brazil boys home
outshone and outdone
Neymar falls and puffs in vain
to the bitter end
Scottish Bird I Know…
Lives on the balcony below
Likes a bet – steamed in heavily on Brazil
Screams eminating from her flat
When them Brazilians pulled one back
Akin to a baboon riding a pneumatic drill.
‘Tweren’t till full-time whistle went
Her old man, found she’d blown the rent
On Brazil to beat Belgie, three goals to one
Angrily packed a case
Stuck a cancer stick in his face
Grabbed his twirls, then sped off to break bread with his mum.*
“Ah…Hen”, she implored her son,
“OMG what have I done?
Yer father’s packed a case, an roared off in his car
This is the bleating fault of them Brazilians
If they’d won, I’d be sat here counting out me winnings
I forgot to check…did whatisname score their goal for them son?”, “Nae ma”.
World Cup day 20
Les Bleus reach the semis
Uruguay 0-2 France
Not since 2006
Have France made the last four
Oscar Tabarez’s men
Were today shown the door
We contrast the fates of the keepers
After Raphael Varane’s header
Sheer brilliance from Lloris
A howler from Muslera
Edinson Cavani a huge miss
Failing to make the bench
Griezmann let fly, Muslera flapped
It’s a semi for the French

Brilliant Belgium beat Brazil
Belgium 2-1 Brazil
Never in history
Where the global teams gather
Has a World Cup winning team
Been led by a foreign gaffer
Fernandinho and De Bruyne
Diving Neymar in an aerodrome
Augusto with a consolation
Sorry Brazil go home
There’s still much to do
Kompany reigns the celebration
It’s now time to rise
For this golden generation

WC2018 Day 20 – Nervous about tomorrow!
It’s almost as if
today doesn’t exist –
work will be perfunctory
tea breaks and coffee breaks
will take just that little bit longer
as that gnawing doubt/hope paradox
gets stronger and stronger;
suddenly everyone’s an expert –
should we stick with Sterling
or gamble with Lotus-Cheek?
Danny Rose – or Ashley Young?
Will the latter be too weak?
Will Vardy be fit enough
if required?
Will the big burly Swedes know
when they’ve been Harry Maguire’d?
And today’s two matches
won’t really matter
won’t be part of the chatter –
it’s as if we’ve looked into the future
liked what we’ve seen
then pulled back
put our heads down
steadfast in our resolve
not to get ahead of the game
nor to jinx
but to prepare right and to prepare well;
leave the jingoism to the press
and let today’s half of the draw self-determine;
let Brazil, Belgium, Uruguay, France play out
in this ungodly game of chance;
leave one there as the goal
as we attempt to reach
beyond boundaries
beyond the cages of constraint
to break the chains of 52 years of hurt
and to put ourselves somewhere
where only the titans of ‘66
have ever been
The Magic Waistcoat
England win a penalty shoot out
now I don’t want to gloat,
but the secret behind it ?
Gareth Southgate’s waistcoat.
Colombia played really dirty
they went for our players throat,
but the Three Lions stayed cool
all down to Gareth’s waistcoat.
Our supporters all love him
he really rocks their boat,
not just for his coaching skills
but more for his trendy waistcoat.
If Southgate wanted to be Prime Minister
he’d certainly get my vote,
not for his political views
I just like his waistcoat.
So if we win the World Cup
it would be an achievement of great note,
and the reason for the success ?
Gareth Southgates magic waistcoat !
WC2018 Day 19 (post)
It takes many years of hurt
To learn how to blurt……
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!
~ # ~
small steps
on a long road
cobbled with miss-haps
yet hopefully
studded with glory
~ # ~
say it again
keep saying it
try to get used to it
get your head around…
the fact
that at a tournament ground
the bells chime….
and England
have won a World Cup Penalty Shootout
for the first time!!!
~ # ~
just when it looked like
we had history repeating
and the usual bleating
and blaming the cheating
up steps big Jordan
and with Pickford competing
the curse we’re beating
and booking our seating
at a Quarter-Final meeting!!
~ # ~
Hands together…
We prayed against for the tease of pennos
We prayed that Cuadrado had a mare
We prayed that James would be injured
And that Kane played without a care
We prayed that Pickford didn’t have to pick
Any ball out of a net
We prayed that Rashford wouldn’t be rash
And that we all had a winning bet!
We prayed that Walker would be racing
We prayed that Stones would stand tall
We prayed that the Bury Beckham
Could bend it around a wall
We prayed that Ali wouldn’t dally
We prayed that Hendo would keep it tight
We prayed that Sterling would cash in
But above all
We prayed that we’d win the good fight!
WC2018 Day 19 – haiku
usual story
penalty dilemma / curse
Pickford’s big strong hand!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
nerves were frayed, Kane calm
senses working overtime
ecstasy abounds
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
giving Nation and
Vintners Association
a shot in the arm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
like playful puppies
jumping all over the place
Bulldogs jubilant
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Los Cafetoros
Ground up by Pickford’s strong hand
Bean and gone
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
in the wise words of
philosopher Brad Bobley
“so sweeeet!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sweden 1-0 Switzerland
a swathe of suave supporters sweltering in the sun
sweaty Swedes swarm across the sward
swarthy Swiss swiftly sweeping forward
a swivel and swipe from Emil Forsberg
and it’s the Swedes who swagger!
Sweden England Next haiku
Sweden England next
hopefully play-actingless
and a finer game
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sweden 1-0 Switzerland
Zlatanless but through
One deflection is enough
To cut this Swiss roll
furnished with success
flat pack four Ikea like
Sweden build their home
ten man Swiss compound
Blagult are still in the mix
England now await
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Colombia 1-1 England
England win 4-3 on penalties.
dear oh dear oh dear
where on Earth do we begin
to pen our relief?
nervy night again
no Rashford* or Loftus Cheek
we looked poor upfront
through but only just
penalty hoodoo undone
but we must improve
coming home the cry
suddenly on ev’ry lip
wiil it be in tears?
On Charles Dickens watching England win on Pennos haiku
From the best of times
To the worst of times, and then!
The best time ever!
Gareth Southgate W1A Penno haiku
‘We own the process.’
I’ve no idea what that means –
But I’m glad we do.
World Cup day 19
Forsberg sends Switzerland home
Sweden 1-0 Switzerland
Some thought the talisman
Retired in the autumn
Sweden are a team now
No Zlatan, no problem
Forsberg’s shot deflected
Helvetia chuck the towel
Swiss Lang is soon sent off
For a very late foul
Magical run runs
As the Swedes beat the Swiss
For the first time since 1994
It’s World Cup Quarters bliss
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Penalteam England are in the last eight
Colombia (3) 1-1 (4) England
When it comes to a spot kick
It’s that man Harry Kane
With seconds left on the clock
Yerry Mina inflicts the pain
We go to extra time
90 minutes and add ons are up
Sweat in gallons and nails are bit
This is the World Cup
Hendo and Bacca fail to net
Pickford, Dier, destiny on a date
We have news for you
England are in the last eight
‘You’re Supposed To Be At Home’ is an excellent and moving poem Denys.
You start off thinking it’s just about another oft-sung chant, one we personally heard a lot last season throughout our second relegation in a row here at Forest Green(FGR) ! I always love poems where you think they are saying one thing and then they suddenly pull you deeper to somewhere or something else else.
I’m currently helping in a local school for FGR in a voluntary capacity using football to help young students with reading. At an upcoming session we will tackle racism, just like we did in workshops at football schools and grounds when we first started this site 24 years ago. I’m gonna try and weave your poem into a session.
We’ve added it to the Anti- Racism/Kick It Out section under Crispin’s Corner.
Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.
Hi Denys…
Re Man City:
OK it was 20 years ago but Criag Wilson did write this and a few others on them back in 04/05.
BTW I’m more Forest Green Rover since 2014 (and Chelsea) these days . I drum and am a standing season ticket holder .
Hi Denys,
Yes Richard Williams you’re a brilliant wordsmith, my friend. When I first saw your football poetry I thought it was the superb Guardian sports and music writer. I once had the honour of sitting next to Richard Williams while at the Independent on the sports desk. He writes about music and sport with immense knowledge and authority. I’ve read a couple of Richard’s books recently. Great writer rather like you Richard Williams the Pompey fan. Congratulations on promotion.
