a meteoric rise
into the stratosphere;
privately funded,

rockets from the mother ship, White Knight
and enters into space
and history
before spiralling back to earth
and a safe landing

Going back to the first game of the group,
video footage released in the last few days,
showing just how nerve-wracking a last minute penalty can be,
for even the greatest player on earth :
encouraging this following stanza :

We reach for the stars
in dreams, in bars
we gaze upon fiery comets;
Zidane vomits

France top the group, England 2nd, Croatia 3rd, Switzerland 4th

Space travel :

Starting off at the Mojave Airport, 100 miles north of Los Angeles
A winged mother ship, named White Knight, carries
the world’s first private spacecraft,
SpaceShipOne, a winged rocket plane, below it’s belly.
Released at 50,000 feet, SpaceShipOne then rockets into space.

The following from BBCi :
SpaceShipOne has rocketed into the history books to become the first private manned spacecraft to fly to the edge of space and back.
The craft, built by aviation pioneer Burt Rutan, went over space’s 100km (62 mile) boundary, said mission control.
It was carried to 46,000ft (13.8km) by its launcher White Knight at which point it was unleashed. It fired its rocket to continue its trip.
Mr Rutan was on the runway to embrace pilot Mike Melvill on his return.
